It is with great sadness that the Akhurst family announces the passing of Bruce Akhurst on Aug. 16, 2024, following a courageous battle with dementia.
Bruce Akhurst, former owner and vice president of Akhurst Machinery, which maintains branch locations across Canada and in California, leaves behind a legacy cherished by all who knew him.
Bruce was esteemed and admired by colleagues and employees alike for his unwavering determination and work ethic. He approached every sale with relentless perseverance, earning respect through his unmatched commitment. Bruce found solace in his lifelong dedication to Akhurst Machinery, particularly during the challenging times brought on by dementia.
Joining his father (Spud) and brother (Brian) in the family business in 1970, Bruce played a pivotal role in driving the company's growth.
Throughout his career, he introduced several renowned brands to the North American market, notably achieving remarkable success with the Reform range of knife grinders from Germany, selling more than 2,000 units.
In 2007, Bruce established a lasting partnership to distribute Leadermac's range of moulders across North America, a collaboration that endures to this day. Bruce also proudly passed on his legacy to his sons, Graham and Ryan, who now co-own the family business alongside Bruce's nephew, Brent Akhurst.
Bruce had an exceptional ability to connect with others through his infectious enthusiasm and approachable demeanor. A stalwart figure in the North American woodworking machinery industry, his absence is keenly felt by all who had the privilege of working with him. Bruce dedicated his life to his work, leaving an indelible mark that will resonate for generations.
